3rd xI stutter in first match of season

Anderson dropped catch 2534618

Finally, 12 days into May, the first game of 2012 for Marshfield 3rd’s.  Sunshine and the Withy looking better than it did all last year thanks to Andy Wills and his helpers.  A new captain, clearly flustered by his responsibilities, managed to leave the stumps at home, forget to pick up the scoreboard, and then inserted the opposition (Hinton Charterhouse), who had made a ton of runs for just 3 wickets last week.

Nonetheless, the opening exchanges were promising with young H. Smith and less young R. Iles steaming in and managing to send the first three HC batsman back to the dugout with only 30 runs on the board.  We then witnessed the “almost champagne moment of the day” when Harry produced a beauty to catch the outside edge of HC’s number 4 bat and our gallant keeper dived to his right to snaffle the ball inches from the turf… and then watch in dismay as it subsequently trickled out of his glove ever-so-slowly onto the awaiting turf.

Adding insult to injury, the same ominous looking batsman, in an attempt to take liberties with our glorious leader, who had selflessly brought himself into action from the top end, then skied a fairly routine chance to backward point and was comprehensively dropped.  Cue a rather long period of ball chasing (and some pantomime fielding from team members who should know better) as HC numbers 4 and 5 both passed 50.

However, young “Chopper” Christie applied an impressive brake to the opposition with an exemplary spell up the hill and the return of the opening duo then saw off the HC pair.  Suddenly, the ball gained ascendancy over bat: Chopper deservedly picked up his first senior cricket scalp, and our fearless leader returned to pick up his usual cheap wickets at the end, with the 9th HC batter finally succumbing to the first catch of the day.  The 45-over total of 205-9, though, was at least 50 more than it should have been and, ultimately, more than enough…

… because, following an inspired Threadgillian tea (‘maraschino cherry and curry sponge cake, my speciality’), half of Marshfield 3rd XI were back in the proverbial hutch before 20 runs were on the board.  A. Wills and M. Dixon steadied this titanic batting performance for a while before the T-man (preferring umpiring over washing up) could no longer keep his fickle finger of fate from sending Andy back to the pavilion [Ed’s note: from square leg, it looked adjacent… at least for height].

While complete capitulation threatened, HC were in fact frustrated by young Calum Burnstone, another 3rd XI debutant, who struck a masterful, and top-scoring, 34 coming in at number 10 (a “cunning plan”, Skip?).  With H. Smith also making a mockery of his place at no. 11, the team’s final score, while perhaps not completely satisfying the formal definition of respectable, finished at 118 all out after 44.1 overs, thanks in no small part to the last-wicket stand of 44.

So, a far from auspicious start to life in WCCL Division 6, but some signs of ‘green shoots’ as the politicians would say.  Calum takes the honours as Marshfield player of the day; no champagne, or even Babycham, moment to record, however.  As they say in Rome (well, they used to): “Excelsior!”
