chunk the hero as 2nds record win

Tom Clist

The second eleven got their season under way against Spye Park as two youthful sides met at a sunny Broadleys. Late changes meant that youngsters Rory Smith and Charlie Chivers made their second team debuts, as well as the not so young Martin Clist.

Despite the added enthusiasm caused by the long wait for the first game of the season, neither side was bothered to set up any sort of warm up. Therefore the game got under way early with Spye Park winning the toss and deciding to bat on a pitch that looked like it would have plenty in it for the bowlers. However possibly due to the lack of match practise, opening bowlers Cox and Trutch failed to consistently hit the cut strip in their early overs.

Trutch did eventually manage to bowl 3 straight balls in quick succession which was enough to see off the Spye Park top order as they slipped to 25 for 3 (less than a quarter of which was scored off the bat). The vast experience of opening batsman Young and captain Anstee de Mas was needed to dig deep and see off the remaining overs of the opening pair, with the scoreboard continuing to tick along due to a few more leg side wides.

The first change of the bowling saw Tom Clist introduced from the pavilion end. A few extra pounds (due to excessive close season drinking) and a lack of pre-season practise meant there were low expectations for the young man and no one anticipated the carnage that was to follow. Unlike the opening pair, Clist wasted no time in finding his line and length and troubled the batsman from the start. Two overs into his spell he broke the growing partnership by clean bowling the visitors’ captain, and claimed his second victim in the same manner with his very next ball. The next man in came to face the hat-trick ball looking dangerous sporting full brand new kit. However he suffered the same fate, as Clist completed a remarkable hat-trick silencing the away support. A senior Marshfield fielder was overheard to inquire if the departing batsman had kept the receipt for his new gear. This could only have been senior martin Clist, whose banter was entertaining throughout the game. Clist junior then claimed his fourth wicket to leave the visitors reeling at 70 for 7.

However some stubborn resistance and rear guard action meant the visitors frustrated the hosts and made them work for the last wickets, eventually being all out for 139. Clist returned to claim his fifth to finish with figures of 9-3-20-5. Opening batsman Young was rewarded for his efforts with a solid 39 not out from 40 overs. However It was unfortunately ‘extras’ that top scored for the visitors with 45.

After Anita Bishop had set the standard for Broadlys teas with a fantastic spread, Andy Jenkins and Mark Crawford walked to the crease with a potentially nervy 140 runs to chase. Fortunately the visitors opening bowlers were even more generous with their extras and despite losing Crawford early to a contentious LBW decision the home side were making light work of the chase. Much to the disappointment of the large afternoon crowd, number three Martin Clist failed to make an impact and also departed early. But Jenkins and Keith Pullin steadied the ship and eased Marshfield towards their target. Despite both of them falling in quick succession, any chance of a late Spye Park comeback were dashed as Jonny Heyel and a confident Tom Clist smashed Marshfield to 143 for 4 inside 18 overs for a comfortable first win of the season. Extras again top scoring with 50.
