2nd xI soundly beaten despite bishops bashing
The second team were looking to build on their positive start to the season with a tough trip to Trowbridge. A vital toss was won by the home side and Marshfield was put into bat, in what turned out to be very difficult batting conditions.
The ball was doing plenty, and it wasn’t long before makeshift opening batsman Henry Trutch was on his way for 0. Last week’s hero Tom Clist joined Andy Jenkins at the crease sooner than expected, not just because of the early dismissal of Trutch but also as original number 3 Jim Creed was still on his way from Marshfield. Jenkins too fell quickly and was followed back to the pavilion by Jonny Heyel and Rory Smith with neither of them troubling the scorers.
Creed eventually arrived to see the scoreboard reading at 7 for 4. By the time he had put his kit bag in the changing room and got into his whites, Clist was also on his way back to the pavilion and the score was now 8 for 5! Jim strolled out to join the skipper, needing not only to re build a flailing Innings and bring the side back into the game, but also to try and avoid a lowest ever league total by a Marshfield side which was still well and truly on the cards.
A vintage Creed innings was needed; however it was not the ‘legend’ (self-proclaimed) who took the attack to the home side. Creed instead played an unusual dogged support role, a role rarely seen in his long and illustrious career. At the other end captain Simon Bishop took a different approach, bunting each of the opening bowlers over the top for boundaries. He followed this up with four fours off the first over of the first change bowler, including a textbook pull shot and what appeared to be an attempt at the ‘Dil-scoop’. With the skipper continuing to find the boundary at regular intervals, he had almost single handedly dragged his team back into the game. With Creed getting off the mark in more typical fashion with a 6 over the pavilion and into a garden, the score flew past 50 and a competitive total was looking more likely.
However the fall of Bish’s wicket for 42 started a second collapse as the tail offered little resistance, with Marshfield eventually all out for just 98. Still a much better position than anyone would have thought 5 overs into the contest.
Marshfield needed early wickets but the pitch had become considerably easier to bat on. That combined with Clist unable to re capture last week’s form, Cox again struggling for consistency and some slack fielding, meant the home side got off to a comfortable start. Mark ‘the sea lion’ Salen was donning the gloves for the first time in a second team game and was severely tested by his bowlers, saving many stray balls from going for more extras. Breakthroughs finally came in quick succession Trutch first with a direct hit run out, Cox finding a straight one and Bishop getting in on the act thanks to Creed holding onto a towering catch. Any chances of an unlikely fight back were dashed as Trutch decided to bowl the home side towards victory with numerous wides, in a long over which did include a wicket to get the hosts 4 down. Creed was never far from the action all afternoon, this time caught on the shin at slip by another stray ball from Trutch.
Defeat was always going to be hard to avoid after slumping to 8 for 5 and Trowbridge eased to their target to win by 6 wickets.
