1st xI maintain 100% winning start to season

crockett tubbsWith half the team driving around Swindon and ending up in the Nationwide Headquarters, battling through security gates, this top of the table clash was sure to get the interest rates rising (see what I did there?). When we finally did get ourselves organised and missed Big Dawg’s carefully laid out warm up cones, Chalky lost the toss and Marshfield were put into bat.

There was some early movement but the Crockett & Tubbs Hobbs axis at the top of the order started to move things along, with some great shots and some not so great. Although, how you can call a straight six over the sightscreen not so great is beyond me?! Anyway the score fairly raced along until another 50 plus opening partnership was recorded. Tubbs then fell for a well made 40 and with Crockett hitting regular boundaries the score quickly passed the hundred mark. Crockett left the scene looking sweaty and a little more rouge (if that’s possible) than when he entered the scene, for a run-a-ball 73 (7 fours, 5 sixes). In typical Marshfield fashion there were a few middle order jitters but with some useful 20s from Big Dawg, Beej and Matty Wats, followed by some lusty hitting from Lord and useful time at the crease from Mini Dawg, Marshfield did eventually manage to reach maximum batting points. A few lads were unhappy we didn’t make 250 plus but at tea the skipper was pleased. Although he was not in the least bit pleased to notice that the once chintzy and uber-cool Nationwide clubhouse roof bar, used for tea, has now been turned into several rather corporate looking conference rooms!

The new ball was taken by Griff and Lord. Scoring was kept fairly tight although opening bat John Clarke did like the off drive, but when he was snared caught behind off Lord for 28, things looked up for Marsh. Lord soon had another wicket – this time caught by a diving (Colgate advert audition) Beej at cover point. We could now sense what the away support wanted and so without delay the Kashmiri Tiger himself, Rahn Heer, was brought into the attack keeping things tight as well as having Riz Qaudri caught round the corner by the skipper (having a leg side trap, inspired fielding position? You be the judge). At the other end Mini Dawg was champing at the bit for some action and as soon as the lead was unclipped he was in amongst the wickets – tormenting the batsman with his tenacious flight and guile.

After around 25 overs, Nationwide were well behind the rate at 70 for 4 and with further pressure created by the skipper’s bowling, they decided to dig in to pick up what batting points they could. Marsh, however, sensed a full points win and tried hard to bowl them out for under 125. The ball was even – yes you are reading this right – thrown to Beej who did in fact “do a job” claiming two wickets. Patience was the game and finally Marsh did bowl out Nationwide, with the master himself Big Dawg picking up the final two wickets, for 127. Not quite full points but enough to satisfy those on a sunny day in Swindon.
