beeJ signs off with match winning 5-fer

P1010160

"Remember the date,” and “One to tell the Grandkids” could be heard at the end of this epic encounter with Malmesbury. On paper top plays third bottom should have been one way traffic – if only! Put into bat on a muggy day that always threatened rain, Marshfield got off to a flyer. Hobbs with his new partner in crime AJ, ran up a quick fire 50 and Marshfield looked in a great position on 80 without loss after the first 10 overs! A couple of youngsters in the Marshfield side could be heard talking about 300 plus. Oh dear, they obviously haven’t seen enough Marshfield cricket! As you all know 80 for none can very quickly become 148 all out – and so it transpired! With Malmesbury taking the pace off the ball, their slower bowlers took wickets at regular intervals to leave Marshfield with a much under par total at tea.

However, during our sumptuous feast – chicken and stuffing sandwiches and warm onion infused sausages being the particular highlights – confidence was fairly high believing that if we got in amongst the wickets we would have a chance.

With Lord and Ranjani opening the bowling there were some good chances even in the first over. Despite these, the Malmesbury openers were unmoved and made good progress towards their target. The skipper decided to bring himself on and took the first wicket with the score on 42. Mini Dawg’s lead was then unclipped and the little terrier got in amongst the Malmesbury wickets himself. The score was suddenly 74 for 4 and Marshfield sensed something. Max Sparrow, striding to the crease with real purpose, had other ideas. His quickfire 38, with some towering sixes, turning the match back towards to the men from north Wiltshire. The skipper rang the changes and brought on Big Dawg at one end and Bobby Jenkins (yes, once again, you are reading that correctly) from the other end. Sparrow then drilled one low down to Big Dawg at short cover and the match was back on. The visitors requiring just a further 35 runs to win with 5 wickets in hand. Jenkins with his unique blend of right arm, spin, swing, filth proceeded to cause mayhem in the Malmesbury dressing room taking wickets at will. The man from Back Lane mopping up the tail taking 5 for 20! Crazy scenes at the end with Marshfield clutching victory by 14 runs with a match sure to get the crowds back at Broadleys!
