bear falls one short of century as 1sts "go nap"

Greta Bedwyn - A lovely Spot!

Yet another top of the table clash for the lads – this week away to Great Bedwyn. A village between Marlborough and Hungerford, famous for Wessex battles in the 7th century and a delightful spot alongside the Kennet & Avon Canal.

For once, the Marshfield side were there in good time and enjoyed an extensive warm up routine of catch and banter amongst the June sunshine. Upon winning the toss, Chalky decided to bat and Hobbs and AJ once again passed 50 for the first wicket. It needs to be reported that during this stand something remarkable happened rupert crockett– AJ hit a boundary not only on the leg side but IN FRONT of square too! Incredible scenes! Unfortunately Hobbs was out soon after for another brisk innings, which brought Marbella’s finest to the crease – Bear. Some good partnerships followed with AJ and the promoted Mini Dawg. However, when these were out the lower middle order fell away, nevertheless Bear was still there. Lurking. Waiting. Hunting. With extras adding a few, Bear made his way towards a well deserved century. But wait! Oh no, in the last over he knicked off and trudged back with a superb 99 to his name.

At tea Marshfield were a little disappointed not to have made 30 or so more runs, given the start they had but knew if they bowled well 221 would be enough.

Tight bowling at the start from Lord (10 overs straight though and very unlucky) and his new new-ball partner Chop, ensured that Great Bedwyn made slow progress towards their target and when Chop snared Quinn for 10 Marshfield were in the box seat. However, “the league’s best bat” then arrived at the crease and started cautiously before unleashing a few lovely drives and pulls. Chalky then brought himself on and soon had “the league’s best bat’s” brother out. The crowd then knew it was time and sure enough Mini Dawg’s lead was unclipped and not for the first time the little terrier was in with a wicket early on.

At drinks, with Great Bedwyn on 75 for 3, Marshfield were in the ascendency but with “the league’s best bat” still there, anything could happen. He moved onto his half century and Chalky taking himself off to save a few overs for the end, allowed Big Dawg and Mini Dawg to bowl in tandom. This obviously did something as “the league’s best bat” holed out to Lord at deep mid wicket off Mini Dawg. Marshfield now sensed victory and despite some lusty blows from Andrews towards the end (42 off 39 balls), Big Dawg’s brand of Bobby Jenkins style spin/filth picked up four wickets and there was even time for the Kashmiri Express to pick up a wicket at the end. Great Bedwyn all out for 179, Marshfield winning by 42 runs.
