iles makes "short" work of burbage bowlers

3rd Collinbourne 31 05 14 7

The seconds made the long journey to Burbage in the heart of Wiltshire without a win since the first weekend of June, and sitting  only a couple of points above the relegation zone they knew a win was vital. Bish won the toss and decided to bat on a hard dry wicket, something rarely seen this season.

Mike Atkins was making his long awaited season debut and strode out to bat with vice-captain Matt Clay who unfortunately returned to the pavilion 5 minutes later as the day’s first major decision went the way of the home team.  The in-form Rob Iles joined Mikey who was looking far more comfortable at the crease than he did in the back of Griff’s car (not sure if it was because of Griff’s driving on the long winding country roads, or Clisty attempting to hit the high notes of Ushers single ‘Climax’).

Luckily Marshfield avoided the usual top order collapse as this would have caused real trouble with the younger half of the side still paying a visit to the Burbage local shop (spending their  match fees provided by their parents) and Jim Creed still unaccounted for. The batsman dug deep and the pair pushed the score past 50 and towards the first batting points. When all were present, the rest of the boys were able to bask in the sunshine, kick back and enjoy Mikey’s stroke play. However the runs began to dry up as Atkins departed for 29 and despite some traditional Creed boundaries the middle order failed to make an impact. Brief cameos from Chopper, Rory and Bish were enough to support Iles to the end and the eventual total of 166 for 7 was largely thanks to a brilliant 88 not out from the number 3.

As the rain back in Marshfield began to fall, the tea at Burbage was enjoyed in beautiful sunshine on the fantastic variety of reclining benches.  In the absence of Bupe, the skipper decided he would take on the responsibility of the gloves and you could feel the nerves amongst the fielders as the first time the ball beat the bat it shot through the legs of Bish for 4 byes. However it was a different story in the following over as Cox found the edge and this time it was straight into the skippers gloves and Burbage were 1 down.

Griff made it 2 in the next over and triggered a collapse from the home team as they lost 8 wickets inside 18 overs. The fantastic spell of swing bowling (bowling batsman round their legs) saw Griffiths and Cox finish with 4 wickets each, it also included a fine display of one handed keeping from Bish (who only added 1 more bye to the early 4 in a surprising yet impressive performance) and the usual dropped catches from the fielders. Rory Smith was bought into the attack and after more dropped catches he got his man at the fourth attempt to leave the hosts 9 down.

Directly after a brief and pointless drinks break, Clist claimed the final wicket with the first ball of his spell thanks to a brilliant slip catch from Iles to complete a fine victory. Marshfield will hope they can make winning a habit as we enter the second half of the season with a trip to bottom of the table Spye Park next Saturday.
