welcome to withyworld 2013 v.2

O ne week on, and back to the Withy again.  Outfield even shorter and lusher (but still with those pitch-marking crevasses to keep fielders on their guard) and the artificial even more firmly tacked down by MCC’s answer to Bob-the-Builder.  Another nice day for a bat, and bat we did having lost the toss again and been inserted by our visitors, the division-leading (and unbeaten) Lacock 2nd XI.

It soon became apparent that Lacock’s table-topping position was not unrelated to a pretty decent attack centred around three irritatingly accurate bowlers.  Scoring was not easy but patience was essential.  Unfortunately, this is a not a characteristic common amongst us, and only three batsman passed 20 (and no-one out-scored extras) or, indeed, reached double figures.  Commander Roper anchored (sic) the innings with great tenacity, and Willsy played the best shots, but we finished on 128-8 off exactly 45 overs, newcomer Ed Brown having secured the third batting point just before the end.

Tea was in the safe hands of the Vice-Skipper who produced a spread of culinary genius, including a number of his signature cakes.  Who else in the club makes their own pork scratchings, prepares smoked mackerel pate and lime sarnies, and can deliver a Battenburg cake that Mr. Kipling would gladly (and exceedingly) call his own?

Thus fortified in both body and mind, the 3rd XI took it upon itself to make life as difficult as possible for Lacock to attain the modest run target set.  Harry Smith, James Ford and Kartar Singh all bowled excellent 12 over spells, without much in the way of luck.  Repeatedly beating the bat, with shots in the air falling frustratingly into open spaces, and only the really difficult ones finding a valiant fielder who could not cling on.  The ground fielding was of high quality, good stops and hard chasing down of anything beating the ring.

Kartar picked up two wickets, one a super catch in the deep by Harry off a real steepler.  However, one of the Lacock openers was most obdurate, batting 40 overs for 20 something, while their number 4 somehow survived to make a 50.  Eventually, with the main strike force bowled out, it was Prof. T(ea) who stepped in to bowl a few tight overs and finally remove the limpet-like opener.  It just wasn’t quite enough and only in the 42nd over did Lacock finally pass our total with 3 wickets down.

Difficult to say what might have happened if we’d been able to put another 30-40 runs on the board.  What is true is that the bowling/fielding performance was one to be proud of and, if we’d had a break or two, the result might have gone the other way.  Man of the match shared between the 3 principal bowlers; champagne moment was probably tea, of course!  Next week, the pressure stays on for the 3rd’s to turn the run of defeats around with an away match against the other unbeaten side in the division.  Rumour has it that Big Daddy Dicko will be back…
