1st xI edge thriller at bedwyn

W ith the ever reliable GHS mini bus packed up and the usual crap banter flowing, Marshfield First XI made their way to Great Bedwyn, just to the south east of Marlborough – a village mentioned in the Domesday Book and which had its own Great Fire in 1716.

Despite having won only two games so far, the lads as usual were in high spirits and upon arriving at the ground were met by Matty Watts and Scorer Chris. They had their usual look at the wicket, pretended to know what they were talking about and then something odd happened….we all started to get changed, move out onto the outfield and had a little fielding warm up for 15 minutes!

With Danny winning the toss and batting, perhaps the fielding warm up didn’t really pay off, but it was good fun nonetheless! The Brothers Watson opened up and within 2 balls Bill Blazer Johnson had turned up - unbelievable! The Brothers raced away and were going at around 7 an over, until Matty Watts skied one to mid-off for 24 and Danny Watts caught behind for 19. Blazer and Lodgey rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 96. Blazer in particular being very cautious just outside off stump as their field was extremely well set to him. However, as the partnership grew, so did the run rate.

Blazer fell for 46 with 12 overs to go. Lodgey carried on pushing singles and twos combined with the odd big biff over mid-off! With Jack pushing him for more runs, the score rattled on and Marsh managed to make 100 of the last 12 overs, to finish up on 207 for 5 and with Lodgey not out on an excellent 77 (8 fours).

With the threat of rain all around, at times completely encircling the ground, tea was taken. The highlight being the lovely scones.

Opening the bowling was Lamby, who soon had J Palmer bowled leaving one that jagged back up the hill, and Coxy – fresh from Second XI and Sunday League wickets – who was accurate and offered good support. Chalky then replaced Coxy and wheeled away for his 10 overs which gave away a miserly 20 runs. Allowing the other bowlers to pick up wickets regularly from the other end. In fact Burny’s first two wickets were absolute beauties – two thigh high full tosses in consecutive balls! The first one opener Bosson hitting straight to Matty Watts at deep mid-wicket and the second Josh Quinn pushing it straight to cover! Game on! But with the danger man Rob Palmer still there and being supported well, Great Bedwyn were always in a good position to chase the runs down.

Matty Watts brought into the attack had Rob Palmer caught at deep mid-wicket for 66 and then also took the wicket of captain Dan Swatton for 26. A cheeky two over spell: wickets, runs, wides, siexes something for everyone!

Blazer replacing Matty saw more slow bowling from Marsh and he soon picked up two wickets. Both of which we both taken by excellent catches – the first a one handed, very smart nonchalant return catch; the second a sharp diving catch from Burny at square leg. Burny himself then picked up two more and Marsh were in the box seat with the last pair needing 47 to win. Simple thought most players and the away support (the two Mikes – Lodge and Cox). Not so, as Alistair Tuttle and George Stone nurdled, edged and hit the occasional boundary to bring them close. 20 needed off 3 overs. Surely Marsh can’t give this away.

  • Over 48: Blazer – two dot balls, then a no ball which was hit for 4. Free hit! No, surely not! 4 runs hit from that free ball. Then a wide, then another 2 runs. 13 from the over. Hero to zero?!
  • Over 49: Matt Cox back on to bowl. Full and straight please Coxy. He delivered, 5 dot balls and a single. Great bowling and great bottle from the young lad!
  • Over 50: 6 to win, 5 to tie. Two. Two. Then Bill got one to just turn back in a little and bowl George Stone! Marshfield win by one run. Cue the crazy celebrations and a much needed win for the Marsh.

If Carlsberg did cricket matches……
