close season opener for 2nd XI

Matt Green

A top order batting collapse that saw Marshfield fall to 76 for 6 after a solid opening which had seen them progress to 64 for 1 left the Broadleys outfit with a mountain to climb if they were to salvage anything from the opening game of the season.
It all started so well, although Wayne lost the toss Winsley put us into bat and even though the pitch looked a tad damp no demons could be detected.

Andy Jenkins and Shane Andrews opened the batting confidently moving the score along nicely at around four an over until Jenks was undone by a tremendous out swinger that hit the top of off stump with the score on 29.

Still no need to panic the bowling was decent but certainly not of the lethal variety and the Wayne/ Shane combo duly began to up the pace with some aggressive stroke play. Cue the collapse, Wayne smacked a long hop to mid-off with the score on 64, Shane went after making a stylish 25 and then Jim Creed was undone LBW to a Malinga like in swinging Yorker, both whilst  the score was on 73. Just 3 runs later and two more wickets fell, Andy Elliott being undone by the slow surface chipped up a simple chance to cover and then Chopper “chopped” one to slip.

James Roper hit some lusty blows to move Marshfield to within 1 run of their first bonus point before holing out to mid off leaving the innings in trouble at 99 for 7.

The tail worked hard to get the score up to a respectable 130 but common consensus was that this total was 20-30 short.
Marshfield took to field after tea eager to get off to a good start and strike an early blow. Alas the home team’s openers began in aggressive style and by the fifth over they had moved the score into the 30’s with little problem.  Wayne decided to opt for spin and this initially proved effective with himself and Jim sharing 4 wickets to reduce the home side to 66 for 4, the game was back on!

Sadly a stubborn fifth wicket partnership moved Winsley to within striking distance of the winning line. But Marshfield kept going and some good “at the death bowling” from Mark Dixon and Andy Elliott caused a mini collapse in the Winsley line up and left them still requiring 5 runs from 2 over’s with 3 wickets remaining.  A streaky edge proved to be the end for Marshfield as the home batsmen scampered the remaining runs required to win the game.

A very enjoyable game played in a fantastic spirit that went right to the wire.

Interestingly whilst bowling Marshfield hit the stumps on 2 separate occasions without dislodging the bails!

Matt Green was out for a 'Laughing Diamond Duck', having been run out 1st ball without facing to close the innings, all after walking out with 2 balls ofthe innings to go claiming "It looks like I'm going to claim my first ever not out".
