chopper scores maiden 50 in resounding win for 2nd XI

calne2 800x377

Astrong batting performance set the stall for what turned out to be a comprehensive victory for the seconds away at Calne. Last season the men from Broadleys lost both games against this opposition but as soon as skipper Wayne had won the toss, elected to bat and helped fellow opener Andy Jenkins to a steady start Marshfield never looked like losing this one.

calne4 600x800After the top order batting collapse that occurred at Winsley on the opening day of the season a good response was needed from the experienced campaigners at the top of the order and they provided this emphatically.  Following Jenks demise for a “dogged” 10 runs Jim Creed joined the Captain at the crease and the pair began to get to grips with both the dampish, slow pitch and the decent (if erratic at times) home bowling.  The Dawg eventually perished for 38, choosing the ariel root once too often leading to a simple catch at cover. Alistair “Chopper” Christie strode to the wicket and spared no time in punishing the Calne attack with a series of lusty blows and well timed on drives. The score began to motor along and even though Jim nicked a wide one behind to leave the arena on 40 Keith Pullin making his first appearance for donkeys years came in at number 5 and helped himself to 34 very quick runs.

Full batting points were attained as Booper smashed a massive six over deep mid-wicket and the final total of 210 for 4 looked a very challenging one indeed. Chopper finished on 59 not out and was well deserving of the pats on the back and congratulations as he left the field with bat held high.
Things got even better for Marshfield after tea as a few clouds drifted over the ground to lower the temperature and a nice little breeze appeared to aid our swing bowlers. The Calne openers began the chase confidently and both looked technically adept, guiding runs down to third man and picking up quick singles almost at will but then Clisty struck ! Having just been hit over his head for a four by the Home captain the trap was set a couple of deliveries later with Brighty a few yards deeper at mid-off, sure enough the bait was snaffled and a high and spiralling chance went Brightys way, after some brisk/panicky back peddling Tom clung onto the chance and the bowlers were on their way.

Calne1 800x603Tom Bright was bowling some excellent stuff from up the slope and once he slid a Yorker under the other opener’s bat that smashed into the stumps the home side began to panic, next a superb homage to the Keystone Kops led to the number 3 batsmen heading back to the hutch with just a single to his name. Rory Smith replaced Clisty at the other end and after a dodgy first over that went for double figures he settled into a nice rhythm and claimed 3 wickets in rapid succession with his spin. Calne never looked like getting close to the target and were losing batsmen at regular intervals. Charlie Chivers entered the attacked and proved unplayable, passing the outside edge of the bat numerous times in his superb 3 overs and youngster Gary Hodder got in on the act to claim 2 for 2 to finally put the home side out of their misery with the total on 93.

Overall  a very impressive performance from the 2nds, putting in great performances in batting, bowling and fielding. Man of the Match was Chopper for his excellent 59 not out and run out in the field.
Champagne moment was Jim Creed diving athletically out of the way of a bullet like on drive whilst fielding at silly mid-on for Rory. Common consensus was though that this was the only chance put down in the entire innings.
