3rd xI start with big win

no catch

Game 3 of the season, and finally some sunshine. Home at the Withy to Winsley 3rds and a chance to build upon our two solid 10-pointers that kicked off the 2014 campaign. Pitch given a good rolling and the well-cut outfield of balanced proportions looking pretty good (well done, Club Treasurer!). All we needed on an unusually warm day, therefore, was to win the toss and have a nice long bat in the sun… Of course, that didn’t happen because our skipper, M. Dixon, who had been summarily dropped from the 2nd XI after a single match, promptly lost the toss and into the field we went.

not outYou won’t need telling who opened the bowling downhill, but it was a welcome surprise to see young Rob Iles charging in from the other end with the new ball. In addition, it wasn’t long before we had our first scalp, a leg-before victim for you-know-who, soon to be followed by another easily caught behind by Admiral Wills. So far, so good, but the opposition’s left-handed opener, combined with the rather unusual style of their no. 4, began to take some liberties, forcing a double change, with A. Pierce and new recruit, Graham Tanner, taking over.

With this significant increase in bowling know-how, four wickets went down in quick succession (two to each) and Winsley were looking decidedly wobbly at 86-6. Unfortunately, the LH-opener had not been removed and he persisted in hitting anything loose into the literal long grass (taking a particular fancy to the bowling Professor). As a result, the 7th wicket partnership grew to 56 with the contribution from the opposition number 8 (the unbelievably named Mr Neate, which he certainly wasn’t) amounting to only 7, before the Dixon-Wills double act prised him out.

It remained for Ilo to return and clean up the tail with a sharpish and (exceptionally) straight spell of bowling, leaving the Winsley opener stranded not out in the 90s. The target of 153 was, in the end, at least 30 more than it should have been but, for a first game of the season, the bowling/fielding performance was pretty darn good. Wickets were quite evenly shared, all bowled well, with Graham T leading the way with a frugal 2-30 from 12 overs of naggingly accurate medium pace.

An excellent tea was then served up by the formerly dynamic duo of Piercy (sarnies) and Threaders (cakes) – much enjoyed by all except Ilo who was required to sit in the dressing room writing out 200 times “I will not take the wickets of tail-enders again, that is the birth-right of my glorious captain”.

paceAnd so to our innings, which can be summed up in a few short sentences. Ex-skipper and Ilo opened, putting on 106 for the first wicket before the latter mishit a long hop to cover and perished with 59 to his name. In came second new recruit, Colin Sinkins, and the rest of the runs were then knocked off within 30 overs and without further problem (batters 1 and 3 ending up with 55* and 25*, respectively). Job done, 24 points, and I’m not making this up, you know.

Man of the match has to go to Ilo for his 50 and 3-26, a performance only marred by some philosophical disagreement with a Winsley player about the meaning of being bowled (i.e., is it possible for your timbers to be re-arranged and not be out?). Willsy, who was umpiring at the bowler’s end, was unable to find an answer to this conundrum, but luckily the wily Prof at square leg was able to provide a quick tutorial and young Rob was recalled to the crease. A good start then, and roll on next week at Lacock!

Richard Guy

For the 2nd match running Dicko hit the stumps whilst bowling without dislodging the bails - He can't be getting even slower - can he??!?!
