6th win on the bounce for 2ndXI
Thanks to Piercys decision to put the covers on the pitch Friday night this game was able to go ahead. The weather was damp and heavy thunder showers were forecast so it was essential that Wayne won the toss and put our mid-table opponents into bat. He didn’t fail us.
Marshfield opened with the twin pace attack of Cox and Hodder and the opening batters did well to survive the very lively surface and attack and when they did manage to nick the ball it didn’t go to hand. Left hander Morson eventually got into his stride and began to accumulate runs at a steady rate, his partner at the other end never looked secure and eventually one of his edges was snaffled by Oscar Vellacott at gulley. What followed was very much Morson scoring the runs and his partners trying to survive. Matt Cox claimed another scalp caught by Keith Pullin and then “wily” Graham Tanner joined the attack and soon found himself on a hat-trick, alas not to be.
Oscar Vellacott bowled some excellent seamers that the away side found almost unplayable and his figures of 3 for 21 should have been even better. Westburys Shallow and Tuck decided to go on the offensive towards the end of the innings and a combination of lusty blows, dropped chances and an ability to find the only place in the field where a ball could drop safe saw the visitors attain a very reasonable 178 runs by the time Wayne castled the last batsmen.
Common consensus was that Westbury had got 30 more runs than they should have and on this surface with these conditions this could be a tricky chase.
However once the Marshfield innings began it soon became clear that the away side did not possess the same type and quality of bowling as the men from Broadleys and Wayne (fresh after a ton last week) began to accumulate boundaries at will. Chopper and then Simon Taylor both played sensibly at the other end, rotating strike to the skipper as often as possible as it soon became apparent that he could get these runs on his own in double quick time.
Andy Elliott once again reinforced his new found label as a batting all rounder with 25 well constructed runs and it took a veracious appeal from our scorer Piercy to give Threaders the O.K. to trigger poor Els LBW with his score on 25 with only 3 runs required. Keith Pullin did his best to inspire a collapse when he chipped one to cover and then James Roper was lucky to escape 2 balls later when skying one to mid-on that thankfully eluded the Westbury fielder and found the Broadley grass.
Wayne notched the winning runs and along with it another brilliant 100 and the home side could celebrate their 6th win in a row and with it they climbed to the top of the table as Winsley lost.
Stand out moments were Waynes ton, Oscars bowling and 3 outfield catches for Simon Taylor (jug of Carlsburg duly purchased and shared !).
Champagne moment has to be Boopers full length diving catch behind the stumps that dismissed the Westbury number 5 first ball and left Graham Tanner on a hat-trick – truly rolling back the years
