batting collapse extraordinaire puts pay to happy hour at marshfield

3rds v Box 14 of 107

A lovely day at the Withy for the 3rd’s key match against old rivals from Box. With the Skipper and Hodds suspended after last week’s malarkey, your correspondent assumed tossing duties, won without problem and elected to have a bat in the sun. Following Fordy’s excellent effort at no. 2 a couple of weeks ago, he was given another opportunity to open with the V-C. Sadly, and despite a promising back foot force for 4, James was soon undone by a slower ball that irreversibly rearranged his stumps while he gazed at the passing cumulonimbus (6-1). Willsy arrived and quickly looked very much at home in his role of no. 3 enforcer, forsaking anything but boundaries to hurry the total to 34 before, inexplicably, mishitting a full toss gently back to the bowler.

3rds v Box 46 of 107Next up, Squeaky Salen, making a welcome return to the ranks. However, having mimicked Fordy’s 4 to get off the mark, he then (less sensibly) copied Willsy’s method of dealing with a full bung and holed out to mid-off. The Treasurer then joined the V-C at a potentially fragile 45-3 and, in combination, they kept the crowd amused with some comic running between the wickets. Clearly, this had a disruptive effect on the Box bowling line-and-length and a partnership of some substance was constructed. A second drinks break at 32 overs saw MCC at 129-3 with a reasonable hope of posting a score around 200… Hah!

First ball after refreshments, V-C committed suicide and then both Greeny and Mini-Chops were out with no addition to the score (129-6). By the time the score had struggled to 137, three more wickets (AP, Roper Snr and Rahn Heer, making his Withy debut) had been lost. Al Chivers and Senior Prof. added two boundaries before the latter succumbed, finishing the innings on 145 following a spectacular collapse involving the loss of 7 wickets for a mere 16 runs. Horrible.

3rds v Box 3 of 107Tea was a joint effort of Willsy (with his speciality of onion sandwiches with extra onions bringing tears to one’s eyes) and Threaders, Monsieur Patissier Extraordinarire, and helped to raise our spirits for the second half. An early breakthrough was essential but not forthcoming. Despite excellent spells from Fordy, Al C and Rahn, all of whom made it hard for the Box batters to score, the opposition’s progress towards their target was frustratingly serene. Only Mini-Chopper managed to take a wicket but this was unfortunately a mere ‘blip’ and Box passed our score in their 40th over with 9 wickets in hand.

M-o-M probably goes to the Box no. 3, who made 42 not out and recorded the fantasy bowling figures of 5 for 7 off 5.1 overs (Dicko, eat your heart out). Champagne moment was captured on film (see attached photo) of Piercy “running” a single up the hill at the Withy and miraculously escaping a cardiac infarction. Definitely not our finest hour and significant improvement is essential for next week’s visit to Winsley.
