...but with a whimper

3rds v Box 98 of 107

A nd so to the last game of the season, home at the Withy to Biddestone’s 4th XI. Before we could begin, however, football posts, prematurely and indecently introduced to the field of play had to be removed, a less than straightforward operation it turned out. All tuckered out by the effort, the Skip then lost the toss and we were inserted.

Reigate Priory 25-08-14 7A quiet start against some decent bowling saw us to 22 before, two balls later, the scoreboard read 22-2. Enter the “Ironman”, Roper, Jnr., fresh from a Danish triathlon (use your warped imagination) and making a long-awaited return to the 3rd XI. As expected, some lusty blows quickly followed and the score had reached a good-looking 70 before another big hit turned out to be a miscue and James was replaced by Simon Taylor. Making his second appearance of the season at the Withy, ST was a man on a mission and (despite a double wicket maiden that did for your correspondent and a despondent MCC no. 6) mixed some careful defence, with big hitting to move us on 105 before he succumbed à la Roper. Three more cheapish wickets saw us teetering on the brink at 127-9, but a more than spirited last wicket stand between a rejuvenated Bish, T. and an unexpectedly belligerent Chivers, Snr. (was that a 6, Al?), saw us to 157 and 4 batting points.

The Chivers family laid on a memorable tea (great job, Mrs. C, with those cakes; too bad you missed out, Threaders!) and out we went with high hopes of rattling the Biddestone batsmen from the very start. The openers, however, had not read the script. Despite a tight 6 overs each from Dicko and Ilo, no early breakthrough was achieved and Chivers père et fils were brought into action. While this eased the shackles on the batters, there was eventually a reward when a top-edge off an Al full toss was well held by Willsy at backward square. Young Charles, however, was luckless despite making life uncomfortable on occasion for the batsmen, and our next wicket came courtesy of a run out following an athletic bit of fielding by Rob Iles.

3rd Collinbourne 31-05-14 20The game then swung back in favour of the opposition with their skipper joining the no. 2 in a frustratingly productive stand. Dicko and Ilo returned to prise the partnership apart but, even though Rob finally got a wicket (12-3-23-1), the Biddestone score had by then climbed quite close the target. Meanwhile, the Skip, having unwisely put his foot in the way of well-struck straight drive, had handed over to ST but somehow the ball refused to go to hand (or to stay there when it did) and the Chivers pairing was recalled again. Two wickets did go down, one to a smart catch by son off Dad, but it was all too late, and Biddestone knocked their winning run off an exceptionally wicket-less Dicko for a comfortable 5-wicket victory.

A rather flat end to the season, therefore, and no-one really reached the necessary level to be designated MoM. The sparkling wine moment was Ilo’s run out, a very un-3rd XI bit of cricket, it must be said. Nonetheless, spirits were quickly revived by the double happy hour back at Broadleys and the arrival of a mountain of fish and chips. Maybe next season it’ll be better!
