Good Win for 1st XI but Defeats for 2nds and 3rds

3rd Collinbourne 31 05 14 3

Last weekend saw the sixth round of league matches for the 2015 season, a third of the way through already. Remarkably, by Saturday evening, all three MCC XIs had completed all 6 of their games so far, no cancellations, no forfeits, no silly playing in the rain.

What about our latest matches? The 1st XI was away at Winsley and elected to bat having won the toss. At 89-5, this didn’t look like such a good idea, but C. Burnstone led a recovery with a nice 68, ably supported by Ben Gardner (yes, you read that right), who made 34, and Matt Watson’s rapid-fire 25 not out. After the allotted 50 overs, MCC had 217-8. In reply, Winsley appeared to be cruising at 162-3, but then lost their next 4 wickets for only 13 additional runs, swinging the pendulum firmly back in MCC’s direction. The Opposition no. 7 had other ideas, smashing 40 off 17 balls, but his dismissal at 210 caused bums to squeak in the lower order and only 4 more runs were added before they folded with a run out (their third of the day) 3 short of the MCC total. Bowling honours to Bill J, who took 4-31 and another result in the W column. Well done, chaps.

MCC 1sts Trowbridge 82 of 115The 2nd team, home to Burbage E&R, and with vice-captain G&T in charge, also batted first (upon invitation) and raced to 75 off the first dozen or so overs before Dan Watson was jafferised by the oppo’s first change. Andy Jenks also fell victim to unplayable bounce and turn from Burbage’s slow left-armer, and not long after MCC were stuttering a bit at 122-4. Pullin K then joined the surviving opener*, and a second partnership worth 75 was recorded, before the latter succumbed leaving MCC at 196-5 with just under 10 overs left for some biff, bang wallop to set up a challenging target. Sadly, Boop was out next over and, the one after, the other 4 wickets fell in 5 balls (wkt, wkt, wide, wkt, wkt), all bowled, transforming the lucky bowler’s analysis from 1-36 off 5 overs to 5-37 off 6.4! Even a final batting point eluded us as we finished on 199 all out.

(*editor's note: only modesty prevents the author from revealing that he was the "surviving opener" who went on to top-score with 89).

Tea was fabulous, the opening overs less so with the opposition openers and their third partner (Mr. Sundries) quickly knocking off more than 33.3% of the runs required. Chivers the Younger, however, had managed to grab a couple of wickets, and then Lord Creed, Chivers Snr., and G&T restored some order which, together with a gifted run out, meant that we were back in the game. With plenty of overs in the bank, though, Burbage could afford to take their time and, as Mr. Sundries comfortably passed his 50 (his second of the day), the game appeared to be gone. A couple of late wickets raised hopes but it was just too late by then and the target was reached in the 39th over. Chivers C & A, 3-44 and 1-31, respectively, G&T 2-27.

Gary HodderThe 3rd’s were at Lacock and were also inserted. Lots of personnel changes again this week saw the Cricket Manager back in charge (VC and Dicko on hols, and last week’s skipper banished after leading the team to victory), and welcome first appearances in 2015 of Ellsy, the Elder Roper and Professor (yes, another one) Sankaran. Having lost a wicket early on, the first two of these debutants set about proving their mettle and, in a century stand, took the score to 115 before Ellsy fell just short of a jug on 45. What happened next, you can probably guess… a 3rd XI batting collapse worthy of the name: from 115-1 to 140 all out with no-one else reaching double figures (apart from the redoubtable Commander Roper, who made a fine 40, and that reliable Mr. Sundries again). Lacock’s bowler no. 5 celebrated his birthday (I’m assuming it must have been) with an eye-watering 7-25 (ouch). The MCC score simply wasn’t enough and the Lacock openers moved them well within sight of the finishing line, which was reached for the loss of 5 wkts in the 32nd over. Hodds was the pick of the bowlers with 2-32 off 8 overs, both victims caught by Ellsy.

After 6 games, then, only the 1st XI has recorded a positive win-loss balance (4-2), while the 2nd’s and 3rd’s are in arrears (1-5 and 2-4, respectively). Player availability – or, more accurately, the lack thereof – is mostly to blame for some patchy performances in the lower ranks and one hopes that this situation will improve in the coming weeks. Players in the 2nd/3rd XIs are advised to keep a close eye on which team the Cricket Manager plays for next weekend… his personal win-loss this season stands at 0-6, for your information, so you can’t say you weren’t warned.
