3rds Say Goodbye to Tormarton with Heavy Defeat
With the Prof again dropped to the seconds, following his heroics against Burbage last week, it falls upon me to bring you this week’s 3rd team match report. However whisper it quietly, but the Profs latest 2nd team excursion was not quite as successful (check the scores on the website), so regular readers will no doubt be delighted to hear that normal service may well soon be resumed.
With the Withymead still under repair from the latest attack of “whiteline+weedkiller=trenchitus”, the 3rds returned to the scenic Tormarton ground for Match 7 of the season against Potterne 4ths, who are sitting at the top end of the early season Wiltshire Division 6 table. Thanks are due to Tormarton CC, who were prepared to let us continue with the fixture despite the heavy overnight rain leaving the wicket damp, but perfectly playable. With the forecasters insisting the rain would stop in the morning, and give a dry if not altogether sun-drenched afternoon it was game on. Of course they were wrong! Captain Hodder won the toss, and presumably with memories of Warminster fresh in his mind (and a rather similar looking batting line up at his disposal), wisely decided to invite the opposition to take first knock. After a short but fruitless delay while waiting for the ground to dry out (and 2 more of our players to arrive!), the game final started at 1.15 pm in a steady drizzle.
Potterne adopted a combination of aggressive shot making and run for everything approach to their batting, and although no batsman made a major score, they still managed an impressive and above par total of 194-7 from their 45 overs, for most of which it rained. In truth the score would probably have been a lot higher had the outfield not been so damp. However there were also some good bowling performances from Marshfield. Comrade Hodder produced a miserly spell 1-27 from 11, including one ball which was described very loudly as “unplayable”, by the man himself! Alan Chivers took 3-14 at the death including a very sharp stumping from Tim Woodman, and Charlie Chivers produced an excellent opening 7 over spell from the Football Ground End, beating the bat regularly, and deserving better than figures of 1-20. In the field a special mention must go to Charles Harris, who seemed to be carrying some sort of cricket ball attraction device, as no matter where he was fielding, the ball constantly went in his direction. However Charles got his reward in the end with a good throw producing a run out.
Towards the end of our fielding stint the rain finally stopped, and as the tea interval was reached a very watery sun started to appear and finally things started to dry out. Tea was a Threaders special, with a cornucopia of sandwiches and cakes that were consumed with relish by the appreciative teams. In fact if the rain Gods could have produced their stuff at this moment, it could have been considered a passable performance. Unfortunately though no rain was forthcoming and as tea finished it was our turn to bat.
The less said about our innings the better, and some 28.4 overs later it was all over, with a meagre total of 47. Although Potterne bowled well, on a good wicket we should have done better. Most batsmen managed to get themselves out to a variety of injudicious shots, with the Potterne fielders gleefully accepting the catching practice we gave them, and only Tim Woodman with 10 not out at the end can claim any credit. The only positive was that we nearly managed to double the infamous Warminster 24 all out.
This match brings to an end our brief stay at Tormarton, who were excellent hosts, as for the rest of the season they are home at the same time as ourselves. However as your regular correspondent has said, if there was some way the arrangement could be made more permanent then we should look to make it happen.
