Ilo comes up short in first home outing as Skipper

3rd Collinbourne 31 05 14 7

Almost the end of June, and the 3rd’s finally played their first game of the season at the Withy. Apart from the football pitch markings, the field was in good shape and the artificial, despite looking its age (but who am I to talk?), played as it has for many years. Musical chairs once again selection-wise for this tough fixture against the WCCL Div. 6 leaders, with Dicko, H.Smith and your correspondent returning from their outing in the 2nd’s the previous week. The most significant team news, however, was a first Withy appearance of young Ilo (the official 3rd XI vice-captain) in the role of skipper, an opportunity afforded by the Cricket Manager fancying a few overs for the 2nd’s against lowly Devizes at Broadleys.

3rds v Box 105 of 107The first act of El Niño went well and he won the toss, only to then commit the small error (at least, according to an ex-3rd XI leader of the northern variety) of electing to bat. This assessment was confirmed when, after a dozen overs or so, MCC had amassed 17 for the loss of 3 wickets, all to the nagging left-arm-over from the top end. While the remaining opener and H.Smith did some rebuilding with a patient stand of 30, much of this work was undone once Harry gifted a c&b and another flurry of wickets went down. The bowling, it must be said, was some of the most accurate seen at the Withy in many years and the scoring rate was painfully slow. Only at the very end did Piercy inject a bit of life into the proceedings before perishing to another leading edge. MCC all out 89 off 40.1 overs (zzzzzzz) with batter no. 1 top-scoring with a Threadgillian 21 accrued yawningly from 30 overs at the wicket.

A Pierce HatAfter a generous tea supplied by our diminutive leader, he led us out to defend our homunculoid total. Dicko down the hill was first up and his third delivery was worryingly belted over deep square leg for a maximum. The small smile on the Beehive opener’s face was soon removed, though, when the Lancastrian stops-at-all-stations produced a peach two balls later that clipped the top of off stump. Game on, then? Well, not really. The opposition numbers 2 and 3 had decided – presumably after watching us bat – that we must be pretty dire with the ball too. As a result, their bats were thrown at anything landing there or thereabouts and, even when contact was less than perfect, the ball never went to hand but nonetheless found its way inevitably to the boundary. The lefty opener (surely the only cricketer in Wiltshire to go by the name of Ivan) enjoyed himself terribly and caused some less than flattering bowling analyses, before he inexplicably trod on his stumps having struck a Piercy long hop for another 4. Wickets don't come any cheaper than that – Dicko was apoplectic. Chris Middup also picked up the no. 3 eventually, but by then it was too late and Beehive reached our tiny target within 15 overs.

So, no fairy tale captaining Withy-debut for our vertically challenged boss-for-the-day, and an overall performance that denied the club its first happy hour of the season. No MoM award for reasons that are clear, I’m sure, from the above description of the afternoon’s events. Half the league matches are now done and we sit just above the bottom 2 in the division. Drooping socks definitely need some upward adjustment, dare I say?
