… out with a whimper!
The tag-line for the first game vs. Urchfont this season was “In with a roar!”. Read on and you’ll appreciate the irony.
US Independence Day saw the first of the season’s return fixtures and the visit of Urchfont 2nd’s to the Withy. Following the drubbing of the previous week by the league leaders, the real skipper returned, with the real vice-captain at his side; Dicko was banished upwards and your incapacitated correspondent relegated to tea-boy, umpire and scorer (and very grateful to Hussein for his last-minute availability).
On a pleasant afternoon, the Hodster won the toss and elected to bat given that only 8/11ths of the MCC team had actually made it to the ground when the decision had to be made. However, by the time our openers strolled out to the middle, all were present and correct and available to take part in the subsequent sorry procession from the boundary to the middle and back. The grisly scorecard can be summarised as follows: 54 all out off 22.4 overs, only Big Chris and Extras (top-scorer) passed double figures, five of 11 batters did not trouble the scorers, and the highest partnership was 13. Urchfont’s most dangerous bowler didn’t get a wicket, their other 4 did, with one taking 2 for none off 5 (all maiden) overs. Shot selection by our guys was ‘injudicious’, shall we say, a feature most appreciated by the opposition who, not surprisingly, managed to catch the simplest of dollies that came their way with alarming regularity. Only Piercy managed to get out in a truly innovative way by dislodging a bail with his person while attempting to avoid/swat a delivery that reached a height not often seen at the Withy. It must be said that the Club Treasurer was not overly pleased to be sent on his way by the umpire (not me, guv) but eventually recovered his poise by reciting (what I believe) were several comforting lines from one of Chaucer’s famous tales.
It was clearly far too early to have tea, so the teams agreed to go straight back out. The Urchfont upper order was greeted by the unique sight of young Ilo steaming down the hill, and generating some decent revs, with Hussein providing sterling support from the bottom end. In no time the oppo were reduced to 16-3, batsman no. 3 perishing to a blinder of catch by the Cricket Manager at slip off his trusty lieutenant (“worth the admission fee”, said our one supporter, who hadn’t realised he was watching the second innings of the game, having arrived at 2.45 p.m.). Although there was a fleeting moment of hope springing eternally, it was not to be and the next pair of batsmen took Urchfont to 46 before Piercy and Hodds picked up their wickets. The remaining 9 runs were then swiftly knocked off, Urchfont passing our ‘total’ for the loss of 5 wickets in 18 overs.
With the game done and dusted, tea was consumed guiltlessly and a 10-over-a-side “beer match” was arranged to avoid having to get home early to do household chores. Of course, we comfortably won this game (managing to set a target of over 70), even having given the oppo an extra over… More seriously, though, the defeat cemented our lowly spot in the league and cost our 1st and 2nd XI colleagues a happy hour evening at the club. Poor show. No MoM, of course, but Gary gets the champagne moment for his catch. Next up, Warminster… let’s get more than 24 this time, please?
