50 For Brighty As Understrength 1st XI Win
James Williams took his under strength side on the long away trip to Great Bedwyn for what looked likely to be a tricky fixture but returned triumphant with a win and good all round performance from his team. The afternoon did not start well though with the home skipper winning the toss and inserting Marshfield into bat on what seemed to be a very tacky and potentially slow wicket. Sure enough the dead pace of the strip led to opener Will Pascall mistiming a clip to square leg sending the ball high into the air to be comfortably caught by Bosson at short mid wicket. Jeremy Bond played on just an over later and both openers were gone with just 23 on the board.
Scoring was proving very difficult with the batsmen struggling to find their timing but James and Calum moved the score onto 45 before the young wicket keeper lobbed a simple chance to mid off and when Chopper lost his off stump to a beauty Marshfield were in a spot of bother at 47 for 4.
Time for the Captain to take control and together with Finn White, James put on a stand of 95 for the 5th wicket, some hefty blows coupled with smart running between the wickets saw the away side gain control of the match and when James did nick one to the keeper on 69 the earlier damage had been repaired.
Tom Clist arrived at the crease to join Finn but as he had forgotten all of his own left handed equipment his experiment of wearing right handed gloves and pads lasted just 5 balls and he was gone for a single. This brought Tom Bright to the wicket and an excellent stand of 45 for the 7th wicket meant Marshfield were nearing their target of 200. After Finn departed for a very entertaining 47 Matt Cox strode to the middle and looked every inch the all rounder as he moved swiftly into the 20's before being run out by a tremendous piece of fielding from James Hart. His partnership with Brighty had added 61 runs and moved the total above 250 which already looked plenty and when Gary Hodder joined Tom to help see him to his 50 and beyond the pair produced some powerful and creative last over shots which saw the innings close on 279 for 8.
Unfortunately for Great Bedwyn their Captain and opener John Palmer had pulled a fetlock whilst fielding and although he bravely came in at number 1 he was soon gone for just 5 having been severely hampered with his injury. This brought Neil Maycok to the wicket who went for the “big one” second ball and was caught behind/bowled/stumped (take your pick) for a very brief duck. 2 down for just 9 runs and this set the tone for the rest of the innings. Some accurate bowling from the Marshfield attack and the slow wicket meant that the home side never looked like threatening the Marshfield total. Bosson and Hart put on 32 for the 3rd wicket but at a very slow rate and soon it was 45 for 4 in the 17th over when Jeremy Bond bowled Lauder with a peach.
James rotated his bowlers nicely and attempted to “buy” a wicket with the introduction of Gary Hodder but the 4th wicket pair of Hart and Quinn held on “limpet” like and moved the score onto 130 in the 34th over before James Harts patience finally snapped and he holed out to Brighty at cow corner off of Will Pascalls bowling.
Tom Clist in particular bowled with great accuracy and threat and when he mopped up the 9th wicket caught at fly slip the game was up for the home side. Bondy duly castled Max Andrews for the final wicket and Great Bedwyn were all out 187 in the 47th over.
A great all round performance for the team with the catching and fielding being top notch including Ollie Rogers-Jones making several several fantastic stops. James with 69, Finn White 47 and Tom Bright 58 not out all made the best off a difficult batting strip and outfield and with the ball Clist, Pascall, Cox and Bond really shut the home sides batting down and never allowed them into the game.
M.O.M = Tom Bright.
