Successful Season for the 2nd XI

2nds 5012

With the reorganisation of the Wiltshire cricket league, our aim at the start of the season was to achieve a top five finish in order that we could secure a minimum of Division 6 cricket next year. Our final playing record was Played 18, Won 9, Lost 6 with 3 cancelled/abandoned and this secured us fourth position, level on points with the 3rd placed team and just 4 points behind the runners-up. Going into the final league game of the season we still had an outside chance of winning the league and even had the eventual league winners in some trouble before the rain came and any hopes of final day glory were washed away! Nevertheless, the season must be considered a success.

Overall, batting was our strength and we finished the season with the most batting bonus points in the league. Good contributions were made by several batsman, Glenn Perry (1 fifty) and Andy Jenkins (1 fifty, 1 hundred) both passed 200 runs, Colin Sinkins (2 fifties) and Dan Watson (2 fifties, 1 hundred) passed 300 runs but the pick of the bunch was Matt Watson (3 fifties, 1 hundred) who led the board with 428 runs at an impressive average of 61 scored in a stylish manner. The highlight of the season was an excellent unbroken 2nd wicket stand of 234 against Calne between Matt Watson 108 no and Andy Jenkins who registered an unbeaten maiden century.

The bowling was reliant on the experienced trio of Jim Creed, Graham Tanner and Rob Iles who all bowled consistently well, with Jim quickly recovering from early season bowling “yips”. They were well supported by Charlie Chivers, who built upon the promising displays from last year to become a consistent wicket taking performer and on his limited appearances Hamish Walker continued to show great promise. The leading wicket taker was extremely close, with Jim Creed, Graham Tanner and Charlie Chivers finishing level with 17 wickets each, with Jim narrowly taking the honours with his superior average. Stand out performances came from Hamish Walker with 5-34 including a hat-trick against Westbury, and, on rare 2nd team outings, Wayne Pascall 5-20 against Great Bedwyn and Tom Wallis 6-28 against Westbury.

Our good season was largely down to good availabilities and a settled nucleus of a team with a number of players turning out regularly, with 8 players playing more than half of the games. There were several high points during the season with perhaps the most memorable being an excellent away win at the then league leaders Purton in a nail biting finish, a great fielding and bowling display away at Westbury when we defended a seemingly below par total, and a double against Trowbridge including a great run chase in the away match. There were also of course some disappointments along the way, none greater than our defeat at Great Bedwyn where we somehow managed to both bowl and bat poorly to lose a game we really should have won. The strong nucleus of the team also ensured that we found a really good team spirit to ensure that the season was also very enjoyable. The only downside is that the team can best be described as “full of experience”, and it would be really great to see some youngsters breaking through into the team over the next few years.

Finally I would like to thank all those who help to make it possible for us to play cricket. Thanks go to Belinda and her team of tea ladies (and men) for their excellent teas and to all those at the club who work behind the scenes. I would like to thank all the players for their support throughout the season and to Rob Iles for his assistance as Vice-Captain and to Mike Threadgill for umpiring whenever possible. I would especially like to thank Gary Hodder for his tireless efforts to ensure that we always have a full team.

Thank you.
