3rd XI Lose out to Chalford

holdthesun

After a resounding win last week Marshfield 3rd’s were brought back to earth by Chalford CC 2nd’s, losing by 4 wickets and with 5 overs to spare, although in truth the game was much closer than that, and Marshfield were always in the game. Despite posting the same total as the week before (171-8) there was a feeling that this was a better pitch for batting and a much faster outfield, and the total was perhaps 20-30 runs light, which would prove to be the case.

After winning the toss the Chalford skipper had no hesitation in inserting Marshfield, but he may have been regretting his decision as slowly and steadily the openers, Richard and Dicko, moved comfortably past a half-century opening stand. Indeed for the second time this season Dicko found himself opening and still at the crease 20 overs later when drinks were taken. The bowling was tight and Chalford for the most part kept fielders in close to the bat. Still at drinks Marshfield were in the 80’s and a good base had been laid to push on.

richard guyRichard, perhaps sensing that he was approaching his 50 (and worried whether his professorial salary would stretch to a jug) fell on 49, with the score at 97. This brought your correspondent to the crease, shoved up the order by the skipper in the absence of Hodor. After a dicey start, when only the advanced years of the gulley fielder stopped him from pouching a simple catch, a new partnership formed. With Dicko clearly fading (perhaps more pre-season training out of the bar next season?) he resorted to trying to hit fours, a couple of straight driven boundaries from his partner and finally the field spread. As a result the scoring rate slowed as boundaries dried up. However after a further 40 runs had been added Dicko finally missed a straight one and departed for an excellent 52.

Now the question would be could the middle order take the start provided and produce a winning total. Willsy was perhaps a bit unlucky to be given out lbw for 6, Hussain failed to get his eye in and departed for 1, Terry added a brisk 8, and the skipper 1. The constant arrival of new batsmen to the crease and the tight bowler kept the total down, and finally your correspondent was out attempting a suicidal run to try to get the extra batting point (at 175) for 31. We were then treated to the exciting scene of Chris Middup racing the delivery down the pitch in the effort to pinch a single of the last ball. To no avail - Chris Ruddell was bowled for 3.

tim woodmanA total of 171 again, but on an easier pitch and with a faster outfield and ominously the opponents scorebook showed three prior innings of 250+, so tea was taken reasonably content, but by no means complacent.

Chalford’s response started briskly, with any bad balls punished severely. Richard was quickly into the action bowling one of the openers for 2. Hussain once again bowled well with little reward. Unable to keep a check on the scoring, the skipper turned to Chris Ruddel to take over from Richard after 3 overs and Dicko replaced Hussain after 6. Chris tempted the Chalford skipper to hole out at deep backward square (a well taken catch by Hussain) for 34 and Dicko dismissed the other opener for 24 with a lobbed return catch. Despite the wickets, the rate was consistently high and it seemed that only wickets would win the game for Marshfield.

With around 30 needed seemed that the chance would come. Dicko picked up two wickets in two balls, and nearly a third two balls later. Unfortunately two chances came and went - Threaders failing to pick up a skied catch directly to him at mid-off, and Chris Middup misjudging a lobbed up ball while fielding close in on the leg-side. Hope that Chalford would have a long tail proved unfounded and with the scores on 171 a lusty four brought the win and an extra batting point.

MoM must go to Dicko for his 52 and 10-2-30-4, with honourable mentions to Richard and Hussain.
