Historic 1st 4th XI Game Ends In Victory

3xi calne 03 06 17 03

History was made at The Withymead on Saturday as MCC fielded their first ever 4th team in a friendly fixture versus the 3rds who had a blank week in their league programme.

Twelve a side was the order of the day as willing participants for this contest were not difficult to find. The 3rds contained a core of their usual team supplemented by two members of MCC girls under 15 team. The 4ths contained a mix of “old time” MCC stalwarts mixed in with a strong contingent of the Rouse clan.

Things did not get off to a great start though as the outfield grass was too wet to cut and therefore had to be left at “football” length and the artificial strip would have been more suitable for Torvill and Dean rather than the elite cricketers gathered at the ground. Half a bag of sand was found and used to make the strip playable and the game was on.

Dicko led the 3rds and agreed/was forced to bat first. Out strode the confident looking pair of Duckett and Christie to face the accurate medium pace of Nicola Rouse and awkward spin of Gregory Sankaran. A few fruitless lusty blows later it became apparent to all that due to the length of the outfield grass that singles and boundaries were pretty much the only scoring shots on offer. Mini Chops and Tim Hawkes didn't get the memo however and both perished run out trying to get a second run from shots that had been tangled up in the cabbage a mere yard or two away from the strip !

Oliver Hendy joined Callum and the pair put on 30 runs before the later played across a straight one from Nicola and lost his middle stump. Not long after Olly rashly skipped down the wicket to Nina Goerzel after being prompted by his team mates and he too lost his middle stump. Daniel Paul came in and steadied the ship before moving into the thirties with some sensible shots and running and aided by an entertaining cameo from 2012 & 2014 WCCL Division 6 Bowler of the Year Dixon the 3rds finished their 30 overs on 123 for 8.

For the 4ths Terry Bishop ended with bowling figures of 3 overs 1 for 4 and Charles 2 overs 1 for 6. Tobi Hegele who as a German had never played cricket before also bowled his first ever over.

As He forgets its A Friendly Garry Hodder Launches into An  Overly Competitive Team Talk

To avoid the forecast weather armageddon the teams switched straight round with tea to be taken at the end of the match. The 4ths got off to a terrible start though losing their first 3 wickets for just 2 runs !! “Big Hitting” Hussain Saeed came to the wicket at this point and immediately lived up to his name dispatching the 3rd team bowler of the year 2016 and current County Over 80’s player Rich Guy for 2 massive sixes. Alas it didn't continue and Hussain was duly caught on the boundary soon after but momentum had been established. George Pollitt and Keith Pullin began to score at the required 5 runs an over without being much troubled by the tame 3rd team attack. George eventually edged a Daniel Paul delivery to keeper Olly behind the stumps and that brought 4ths skipper Gary Hodder to the crease. Steady (if unspectacular) progress was made and despite Dicko trying every bowler he had at his disposal he could only watch on in horror as club legend Kieth Pullin eased the 4ths to victory, achieved with nearly 2 overs to spare.

For the 3rds Daniel Paul finished with creditable figures of 3 overs 2 for 9 and Lily Murnan bowled a very tidy couple of overs.

Many thanks to Sandra and Charles for providing and excellent tea.
