Tarr Steps Up to The Plate To Help Defeat 3rdXI

3rdxi bathford 08 07 17 11

The first match between these two sides produced a stunning game of cricket, with Trowbridge only just knocking off the pitifully low 63 runs needed with one wicket in hand. The rematch was never likely to produce such a memorable game, and in the end Marshfield fell significantly short chasing 174 and lost by 62 runs.

Availability for selection is a perennial problem for the thirds, although so far 2017 has been a boon year, with some absurdly strong teams fielded at times, and players forced to undergo a ‘rotation’ policy. However the arrival of school holidays has somewhat thinned the ranks and so Thursday was spent by the skipper on the hunt for players. Happily there seems to a ready source in the Bath University Pharmacy department (home to Guy, Threadgill, Woodman and currently hosting Daniel Paul) and this institute coughed up another gem in the compact form of Mushtaq Md, on loan from the sub-continent. A quiet man off the field, when bowling he channels the spirits of the great fast bowlers. His six overs, sadly curtailed by injury, yielded three wickets, and included one caught by specialist gulley Bishop off a delivery that lifted sharply off a length.

morneBatting first after winning the toss Trowbridge accumulated runs at a reasonable rate, but also lost wickets regularly. At 129-7 and then 133-8 Marshfield looked capable of restricting Trowbridge to a very achievable target, however an excellent innings from youngster Tarr helped them to 174, at least 30 runs too many. Inthe absence of Mark ‘The Preston Trundler’ Dixon and Warren ‘Morne’ Shipp, Marshfield were one bowler short, but both Terry Bishop and Tim Hawke stepped up and completed tidy spells, and both picked up a wicket. Extras were the biggest problem, with some slightly harsh officiating and some loose bowling an astonishing 34 runs were conceded as wides, and extras was a clear top score with 44. Praise again for Chris Ruddell, with three more wickets keeping his hunt for 3rd team bowler of the year going. Charles Harris claimed another catch – a skier off Ruddell’s bowling and the collective hush around the field had to be seen (or rather heard) to be believed, but the celebration of Harris’s second catch of the year soon followed. Olly Hendy took a good catch off Mushtaq to dismiss the Trowbridge skipper, but lost style points for fumbling three times in the process.

exeter geriatrics 12After the most beige tea your correspondent can recall, Marshfield set about a response. In the absence of Prof Guy, presumed to be regaling unsuspecting (and most likely uncaring) Americans with tales of his batting exploits, Gary Hodder opened up with Olly Hendy. Alas Olly fell cheaply as did Mushtaq, who batted as he had bowled, all action and a shot for every ball. Alas one mistimed swing too many and he was caught at mid-on. Daniel Paul now joined Gary and the two batted sensibly. The Trowbridge bowling was good, and runs were hard to come by. Gary ultimately fell for a hard earned 39 and Daniel for 18. After an all too brief flurry from all-rounder Terry, and a fail from the skipper, Martin Roper and Chris Ruddell batted well to push the score past the second batting point. One shot too many and Martin was out for 15, leaving Tim Hawke to close the innings with Chris, and Trowbridge frustrated at not bowling Marshfield out.

So another defeat, and the 3rd’s just not strong enough on this occasion. One more bowler and a big hitting batsman would probably have been enough, but at this level the skipper has to take what he gets. It was good to see Tim Hawke bowling and he is clearly starting to find his rhythm.

Mom was between Gary and the new boy Mushtaq, but for his sheer enthusiasm when bowling Mushtaq just edged the decision.
