The Ollies Bat 3rds Out of A Fine Mess to Victory

3rds goatacre 12 05 18 10

By some weird whim of the fixture computer, Marshfield 3rds took on Calne 2nds in WCCL 8 action on the same day that the Marshfield 1st XI played their Calne counterparts in the more exalted WEPL Wiltshire Division. The 2017 encounters had seen Calne 2nds claim two thumping wins, and on both occasions, their top order had made short work of the home bowlers, albeit with a lower order weakness that might be exploited should early wickets fall.

The recent wet weather had left a soft looking pitch, but with the no prospect of further rain until the evening, and a decent batting line-up Jim opted to field on winning the toss. Dixon and Duckett opened up, with Mark’s nagging line and length and Callum’s extra pace on the ball. With a short boundary on one side and a much shorter outfield, it proved hard to stem the flow of runs, with Dixon bowling his nine overs straight through for figures of 9-3-30-1. He was unlucky on a couple of occasions that sharp chances were missed behind the stumps. Callum finished wicketless and suffered in his second spell with several buffet balls greedily dispatched over the trees and into the poultry farm. Hodder, Ollie Rogers-Jones and Will Christie all picked up two wickets, but both Hodder and Christie also served up too many poor deliveries and neither would be happy with their figures. Perhaps the best bowling was saved until the end, with the return of Warren ‘Morne’ Shipp. His extra height and pace certainly unnerved the lower order and he finished with 3.4-0-9-3, all of which were bowled. As in previous encounters once the top order had gone, Calne fairly swiftly subsided, but on this occasion not before posting an imposing 195 all out.

3rdxi bathford 08 07 17 48Stalwarts of Tormarton games will know that chasing 196 to win is a tall order, not helped by the usually long, lush grass and typically low and inconsistent bounce. However, on this occasion, the chase started well, with Rich Guy and Ollie Hendy batting steadily to 43 before Rich fell victim to the young leg-spinner Bounds, who gave the ball a large amount of spin, albeit without as much control as might be hoped. Tim joined Ollie, but never looked entirely comfortable, and he departed just after drinks, tamely looping a long-hop to cover. Callum, once again batting at 4, and Ollie now took the total to 120, before he too was dismissed. Ollie, who had been joined by Ollie RJ, reached his 50 but was gone just after, leaving Marshfield on 138-4, but with plenty of time, with the asking rate never above 4 an over.

Previous 3rd XI would surely have caved in at this point, as happened last year against Calne at Beaversbrook (chasing 202 to win, the 3rds went from 96-1 to 112-6 and then 139 all out). This year’s cohort seems to be less brittle, and Chris Ruddell showed some excellent patience and temperament to help Ollie RJ in a 46 run partnership that brought victory within touching distance. Chris (9) and Ollie (49) fell with just a few runs needed, but of course, it’s never easy coming in late with a few needed of the last couple of overs. Indeed Hodder and Creed looked to be playing very cautiously, right up to the 44th over when Jim hit two consecutive boundaries from the first two balls to take the victory and open the way for a happy hour back at the club.

It’s hard to say what’s different, other than that both Ollie and Callum have come on well from last year and the addition of Jim coming in later in the order gives a greater solidity (and belief) to the batting. There will be some tough matches ahead, but if availability remains good for the rest of the season, it’s possible to imagine that Marshfield may well be closer to the top than the bottom of WCCL 8 this year.

MoM hard to split, but Ollie RJ gets the nod for his excellent 49 at a crucial time, a catch and his fine bowling of 9-3-25-2.
