3rdXi Back to Winning Ways at Goatacre

josh harvey

After a chastening defeat at the hands of Corsham 4ths, Marshfield 3rd XI returned to winning ways with a convincing team effort against Goatacre 4ths. On yet another perfect summers day, your correspondent, still filling in as skipper in the absence of big Jim, won the toss and elected to bat, not least because he was still short of four players at 12.50 pm. With some regulars not available the line-up had a fresh look to it, with the young guns Josh Gay and Harvey Vellacott being joined by ex-Box Tony Trotman. Duckett had returned from an enjoyable fielding session for the 2nds, and George ‘Princess’ Pollitt was back in the line-up, insisting that he sees himself more as a bowler than a batter nowadays.

The skipper’s stress levels finally reduced as the remainder of the team arrived, and the trusty West Country solicitors opened the batting (Messers Gay and Guy, surely no better opening partnership in Wiltshire, at least in name). Richard started briskly, and the score had breezed along to 20 before Josh was bowled for 4. Tony Trotman now strode out for his Marshfield debut and brought an air of calm to the batting. Richard was finding plenty of bad balls to put away, combined with a fast outfield, and raced onto 38 before falling just 62 runs short of his century. His wicket triggered a mini-collapse as 58-1 became 69-4, with Pollitt (believing his own press), Hendy and Ruddell failing to make an impact. Callum too came and went, smashing 10 runs from 7 deliveries, but still, Marshfield found themselves at 125-6, with rather too many overs still in hand.

biroTime for the skipper! Off the mark with an easy leg side full toss, nerves settled with some judicious alternation of the strike and ultimately some lusty blows, including a powerfully struck straight drive for four and slog into cow-corner for six. Tony too, having reached a watchful fifty, now opened up and a fifty partnership was reached before Tony was finally bowled by T. Andrews for 75 – a fine start to a new career. From 178-7 the minimum target of 200 was in sight. Will and Dicko both fell cheaply, but young Harvey Vellacott, picked for his bowling, now showed his disdain for the bowling, smashing two super fours in his brief innings. Closing on 208 all out from the full 45 overs, Marshfield looked well placed and certainly better than it looked 45 minutes earlier.

Goatacre quickly found themselves in trouble – losing both openers for one run apiece, the first falling to a nicely taken return catch by Vellacott, the second falling to a ball ‘that did everything’ according to Dicko. Vellacott took his second wicket but was then taken off and replaced with Duckett who nipped out the fourth batsmen, and Goatacre were deep in the mire at 40-4.

A stubborn partnership between G. Lewis and M. Pyke held up Marshfield, and despite being behind the required rate, the delay in taking wickets caused some anxiety for the skipper, not helped by Callum losing his control and coming off after only three overs, clearly struggling with the slope. Dicko bowled straight through his nine overs for 9-4-23-1 and exerted a good degree of control. Will Christie and George Pollitt now took over and finally, the fifth wicket fell, bowled by Christie. From 98-4, Goatacre now tumbled to 121-8 and the game seemed done. Some late flurries aside, Marshfield wrapped up the innings 148 all out, with wickets shared all-round, including for Ruddell and a third for Vellacott.

Goatacre are to be applauded for their stance on bringing youth players into the team – they have had four U13 in every game this year. Indeed for this game, their captain stood down rather than see one of the youngsters displaced by a returning senior player. Young players today are the future, and every effort must be made to encourage them into the senior game and avoid the dreaded ‘drop-off’ in the teenage years.

There were some fine performances all round, including Vellacott’s excellent bowling and batting cameo, but MoM goes to Tony for his anchor innings which laid the foundation for the ultimate win.
