It's Fun to Play against The Y-M-C-A...

With the untimely suspension of Box 2nd’s from WCCL8 after a fourth forfeited match, Marshfield 3rds faced the unpalatable prospect of another beautiful day for cricket with no actual cricket. Early communications from Box suggested that they would try to honour the fixture as a friendly but by early Tuesday this option was no longer on the table. Gary H stepped up to the mark and after scanning local leagues for teams with no fixture, sent off emails to all corners of the region. At first no response came, but finally on Tuesday evening came the confirmation that Bristol YMCA was up for it and the game was on!

On winning the toss YMCA has no hesitation in choosing to bat, but were quickly one down, the first wicket falling cheaply to Will Christie, opening the bowling in the temporary absence of Dicko. The other opening batsman, Sara, wasted no time in punishing bad balls and climbed into Callum’s opening overs. Callum, seemingly struck with the yips, could only manage two overs for a costly 29 runs. Replacing him was Nicola Rouse and she provided eight controlled overs and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Will completed his eight and picked up two more wickets, to finish with decent figures – 8-1-23-3.

village people 200 070208YMCA had seemed well placed at 81-2 but some quick wickets, helped by the arrival of Dicko, this week correctly attired in trousers, saw the visitors slump to 143-9, and the prospect of an early tea. An exemplary and annoying last wicket partnership between Drew and Singh added a further 70 runs and was only broken when the skipper turned to your correspondent for his first ever spell for the club. Jim may have been regretting his choice after the first two deliveries started too leg-side and finished over the boundary, but this aside, the VC found a better line and, combined with some away drift and sharp turn ended with 3.1-0-16-1, with Nicola taking the catch at mid-off. Dicko finished with four wickets, distressingly close to a first 5-for for the season, and indeed saw several close chances missed.

After a season occupying the lower order, Jim clearly fancied a few runs and in the absence of Rich Guy, elevated himself to open with Ollie Hendy. This seemed a good move with some fairly gentle bowling savaged by Jim, and the score raced to 55 before Hendy pulled a full toss to wide mid-off, a very tame way to get out. Jim was now joined by Tony Trotman, fresh from his 75 the week before, and they took the total on to 136 before Jim was dismissed LBW by Drew. This decision was not without contention and indeed was explored post-match at length at Broadleys. Without wishing to go too far, it looked a harsh decision, as Jim was so far down the track, it was speculated that he might have set off before the bowler.

Malcolm joined Tony and both played their part in pushing the scoring on, until, with the total on 201, and just 13 needed, both Malcolm and Tony were out in quick succession, Tony for another excellent 72. Callum bludgeoned a rapid 11, but he too fell and it was left to Sandra Rouse and the VC to edge over the line, with 7.3 overs to spare.

Overall this was an excellent match to play in and many thanks to Bristol YMCA for answering our call.

MoM is genuinely difficult as both Jim, and Tony batted well, and Dicko picked up four bunnies, as well as the VC’s excellent spell of bowling and winning run. As such, I’ll say that cricket was the winner…

One last thing. I’m very proud of reaching this far without mention of Indians, mechanics, motorway patrolman etc… Bugger

Editors Note: Apologies to Bristol YMCA who I'm sure have heard all the Village People gags going, unlike the more mature correspondant I was unable to stop myself from doing them on the pictures and headline.  However, 'cause you're in a new town, There's no need to be unhappy - it won't happen again.
