Coaching Youths at Womens Tri-Series Tournament
Last winter, MCC agreed to fund me through an ECB Level 2 coaching qualification for women. After 6 tough days, 6 session observations, and a final assessment on youth registration night by an ECB coach, I passed. One of the fantastic outcomes of this qualification, was an invitation to participate in a promotional event at The Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton, to launch the start of the international women’s tri series between England, South Africa and New Zealand. All 3 teams were present and ready to support the coaching of over 150 children aged 5-15 years.
The Somerset Cricket Board planned a carousel of skill stations for children that enabled the international players to become involved with helping the youngsters. ‘Supporting’ me on my bowling drills were England players Katherine Brunt, Natalie Sciver and Jenny Gunn and New Zealand players Amy Satterthwaite, Katey Martin. The children loved watching their demonstrations, as did I! It was a tremendous experience for me personally, to coach somewhere different, with such talented and skilled sportswomen. I was also super impressed with the level of skill and knowledge the children already had. Talking to a couple of the young participants, they said:
“It was great to see my hero Anya Shrubsole and get her autograph” and “I loved playing on this massive pitch!”
After the event Andy Fairbairn, Somerset Cricket Board Executive Director wrote:
“I just wanted to write and thank you all very much for your outstanding efforts on Saturday. You personally enabled over 150 children to get up close and personal to international players on the outfield of a First Class county. We have had many emails from people sending their thanks and appreciation on behalf of their children who had a wonderful time.”
