Sixes in the Sun
On what was a glorious sunny morning at Biddestone our Under 9‘s once again took on Wiltshire’s finest. In a topsy-turvy morning the team experienced all the highs and lows of the game in the three games played, with a twist in the tail in game three!
We opened up with a massive 68 win over Bradford on Avon, largely down to some mighty impressive batting, and some extremely tight bowling and fielding. With compact boundaries the sixes rained down from everywhere, with Ollie & Toby Day, Jacob and Ollie Bates smacking no fewer than 7 between them.
If that was a slightly one sided game, the next against Biddestone, with some of our younger members playing their first ever game, was nip and tuck all the way – having set a respectable total of 249 to win we went out to field with much vigour. Close all the way, the match went down to the last ball with 1 required to tie, 2 to win. A quick pinched single, a shy at the stumps, a miss and a stolen overthrow meant that Biddestone had sneaked home by 1 run!
A great game, where Harry, Rowan, Murray and James all made their debuts, with ‘veteran’ Charlie showing them the way in his second game – all showing great promise in their performances.
Now for the twist....throughout the day the Bathford team had been two players short and we had lent them a pair of players for each of their first two games – thanks to Alfie and Toby, Ollie and Ollie – and frankly our two had been their best players in each match, and were very instrumental in them winning their first two games.
Our third game was against them, and again we had lent them two players – Theo and Murray. Batting first we again amassed a great score, with Jacob and Ollie B adding 40 (including 5 more sixes) to go with the 39 they scored in game 1.
Bathford set off at a brisk pace, slowed down a bit in the middle thanks to Alfie, Jonty and Toby’s tight overs, and with all to play for their last pair came to the wicket – you guessed it – Theo and Murray. In between run outs and more sixes, the scores were level with two balls to go......Theo whacked a 4, and who should step up to sweep slog the last ball of the day over square leg for 6 but Murray! Thanks boys!
A great morning ended in dramatic fashion, with Head Coach Martin coming off the field uttering the words – ‘What just happened?’
Thank you to everyone that came along to support the boys.....onwards to Bradford on Avon on the 14th..
