3rd xI hammered in rural wiltshire
Farci”, “gefüllte”, “mimli”, “nadziewane”, “wedi’i stwffio” – whichever way you say it, the Third team was stuffed by Swindon NALGO 2 last Saturday. Only having nine names on the team sheet in the days before the match was not encouraging and the Marshfielders were praying for rain. The forecast was for heavy thunderstorms and we were confident of ten points for a cancelled match. That was until our prayers were answered with the wrong sort of miracle – sunshine!
Arriving at the scenic Moredon Playing Fields, the nine gallant men, including a guest player and two irregulars, surveyed the pitch and their prospects. Fortunately, we had a spectator and, after five seconds of negotiation, Jolanthe de Koning agreed to make her debut for Marshfield. The pitch itself was on the damper side, with a large deep puddle / pond near the boundary behind the bowler at one end. After application of copious amounts of sawdust, the afternoon was under way. Not for the first time, Captain Dicko lost the toss but, miraculously, NALGO chose to bat on a very dodgy surface.
Dicko and Charlie Chivers opened the bowling but the young lad soon pulled up with a bad back. Alan Chivers took over to show his son how bowling should be done. Nevertheless, Dicko and Alan managed to restrict NALGO to 35 for 2 with a very modest scoring rate (helped by Jolanthe’s long barriers and by the ball not travelling well through the pond). Unfortunately, this optimism was soon dashed as Raja and Sandeep put on eighty-seven runs for the third wicket, both eventually being trapped by Derek Watkins. From 122 for 3, NALGO progressed steadily to 150 for 5, when Dicko brought himself on to wrap up the rabbits. Didn’t we hear a lot about his 6 for 26 afterwards (but not so much about the three no-balls and the wide)? Your correspondent took his first wicket of the season. Overall, a remarkably good display in the field, considering the depletion of the team, but NALGO did get to 194 all out in the 44th over (Raja 77, S. Undries 35).
The teams then set about the tea. Actually, they set about the tea so effectively that more supplies had to be brought. After a lengthy break, Marshfield started their innings with modest confidence and Chivers and Chivers. Alan was soon caught behind by Clive Lloyd (C. Griffith in the scorebook) off the bowling of Nauman Ali Khan but Charlie dug in. Mike Holman and Jolanthe made matching ducks. Our quiz team is called “Third Team Batting Collapse” for a good reason and there followed a clatter of wickets, including Captain Dicko. Andy Watts made a quick-fire ten (top score by a batsman; 4 – 4 – 2 – out) and your correspondent got too cocky the ball after a fine late cut. The innings closed with an injured Andy Wills being bowled by Amit Sarona for a round number, leaving the Admiral stranded on 3 not out. 47 All Out, with only 30 of them off the bat – at least it was more than our 14 all out against Cherhill a few years ago. A tour of West Swindon led to the pub, a quick pint or two near the bouncy castle and the karaoke machine and the team returning to Marshfield looking forward to nest season’s visit to this charming little cricket ground in rural Wiltshire.
Highlights: The Marshfield spirit, Derek’s bowling, Dicko’s bowling, the impressive scores by S. Undries and E. X. Tras, Jolanthe’s bright purple “whites”
The captain would like to thank Jolanthe, Derek Watkins, Admiral Cox and Andy Watts for stepping in late in the day to allow us to fulfill the fixture.
