another 9 wicket defeat for the thirds
After the previous week “forfeituitous” win against Winsley is was back to “fortress” Withymead to take on league leaders Lacock.
The toss was duly lost as has become the norm this season and we were invited to bat in very hot and humid conditions. Prof Guy was stuffing himself with Chili Dogs and over easy eggs in the USof A and his steadying hand at the top of the order was missed as the top order struggled to score against the accurate bowling of the Lacock opening bowlers. Thompsett was then brought on up the hill to bowl slow in-duckers a la Piercey and regularly took wickets, whilst Harding at the other end was far more erratic but with a livelier pace than is the norm in Wilts Div 6 was also difficult to put away.
A traditional 3rd order batting collapse was well under way once the returning cricket manager was joined by Chivers Snr. Lacock obviously thought they had done enough (and they were right) and brought on some friendlier bowling once Thompsett had finished with very respectable figures of 5-25 of his 12 overs. The Cobra helped himself to the buffet to score a welcome 34 in pretty quick time and Al put the bad ball away well at the other end to add a patina of decency to the score. Roper Snr and Threadgill Very Snr saw the score to 130 which was thought to be 40-50 short of a competitive total.
Lacock started their reply in steady style deciding that in the heat quick singles were not going to happen and waited for the rare bad ball to despatch to the boundary. The openers did this well, however, Davis gave at least 5 very catchable chances to the field all of which were declined. Once the change bowlers came on though the scoring rate very quickly ramped up with Cobra quickly cancelling out his batting knock in 5 overs and Fordy having a bad case of the Sam Burnstone yips. Threaders fared no better and only when Chivers Jnr returned to the attack did we look like making any in roads into the Lacock batting. The only wicket went to myself (bowling up the hill!!) with a Davis chance eventually being accepted by Redrum , though his innings of 62 was chancy it was a match winning one. His opening partner - the steadier Simmons - survived a plum LBW shout to also eventually claim a half century as our target was easily reached.
So it was a well deserved victory for Lacock who probably had one of the better bowling attacks in the division but not for the 1st time this season our catching let us down badly and although holding on to one the earlier chances may not have won the game for us, it would certainly have at least have made more a fist of defending the low total. We need to improve to ensure we don’t get sucked into a relegation fight…..
