The Maidens are still here after our third season!
This year we have had a squad of 18; 6 teenagers and 12 adult players. Most are new to cricket but we have 5 players who have played before they joined us.
We are coached by Sandra Rouse; I am the manager and Anna Christie has captained this year. Many thanks to all who have supported the team: Mike Threadgill and Will Christie who umpired for us; Jonathan Burnstone and Andy Pierce for making sure we have a pitch and the bar when we need it and a particular thanks to Sandra. Coaching our team is not easy – in the same group we have total beginners who have never picked up a bat before alongside those who have played for many years.
Women’s cricket continues to go from strength to strength. You will hear of the very successful girls teams later. In addition to that there are new women’s teams popping up. Last year Pucklechurch and next year Brislington will join us. There is lots of support from Glos County and Brislington tell me Avon have been great too. The women’s world cup is in the UK next year and 8 matches will be held in Bristol which will hopefully inspire even more women and girls to join in.
Our performance this year is definitely better than last year so we are heading in the right direction. We played 7 won 2 and lost 5. But that doesn’t tell the full story. 3 of our matches were so close and against teams we would have been, and were, thoroughly thrashed by in the past. Chasing 136 against Old Bristolians we made 123. Chasing 122 v YMCA we made 117 and chasing 125 v Potterne we made 123. Can’t wait for next season.
Individual performances have been great; Hard to pick out individuals when some of the team were totally new to cricket this season but some performances stand out. Highest runs this season was Alyssa Smith by a long way. Most wickets was jointly shared by Lisa Young and Anna Christie. General skills levels have approved across the board.
Looking ahead we need to keep building our squad. We will hold an event in the spring to attract new players and hope to build links with the girls teams. We won’t join a league this year as I think we need to build the squad up to manage the match commitments but hopefully will build up to it. And as always are just looking to make sure we continue to have a team.
