"The Lamb Slaughters Warminster"

Marshfield 3rd XI vs Warminster 3rd XI, Land Warfare Centre, 25th May 2019

Marshfield 3rd XI won by 32 runs.

For many great occasions, for instance, the England World Cup win in 1966, the first Andy Murray Wimbledon win, the first Beatles gig at the Cavern club, Preston beating Swindon 4-0 at Wembley (really? – Ed), the number of people who say ‘I was there’ vastly exceeds the real number, as if there is some kind of reflected glory that attaches to being an eye-witness. For the events of 25th May 2019, only ten Marshfield cricketers (‘stretching the definition a bit’- Ed) will ever be able to say that they were there on the day the Tom Lamb smashed a wonderful century to help the 3rd’s to a hard fought victory over Warminster.Wembley

So a return to the Land Warfare Centre – the venue for the historic 24 all out game at the start of the G. Hodder reign as 3rd’s skipper – and once again Marshfield found themselves batting first, albeit not by choice on this occasion. With a slightly stronger side than the eleven who had narrowly lost to Bradford the week before and a decent looking pitch and quick outfield, there was some optimism that things would be different. Alas, the early wickets of the out of form Guy and never in-form Woodman suggested otherwise. Tom Lamb, batting at four, joined skipper Creed and the two settled into a steady period of batting, taking the score on to 68 before Jim perished for 19. With Sam Duckett and Graham Tanner failing to make an impact Marshfield found themselves in a sticky situation, at 84-5. It was now that Tom came into his own. He was supported first by Keith Pullen, with some excellent bludgeoning strokes, until one big swing too many saw him pull a calf muscle (the older athlete over-exerting himself? Ed) After this came Mark ‘Worldy’ Dixon, and he played nicely for his 20 not out (disgracefully turning down a second on the last ball of the innings to protect his ‘average’ – Ed). All the while Lamby was piling on the runs and it was no surprise when he brought up his hundred, and subsequently cut loose, eventually caught for a magnificent 126. Finishing on 248-7, Marshfield had cause to be satisfied.

3rd Collinbourne 31 05 14 39In response, Allers-Hankey (R) batted nicely for his 61 runs, and after Allers-Hankey (T) had been removed by young Sam Duckett, Warminster found the going fairly serene. Warren Shipp, on loan from France, removed Allers-Hankey senior, well held by Graham Tanner at gulley and Jim Creed bowled Crabtree for 38. The player who looked most dangerous, Carpenter, wasted no time in playing expansive shots, to almost every ball. He played one shot too many and smashed Duckett straight down Tom Lamb’s throat and the result was no longer in doubt. Tanner and Creed now exploited the opening in the batting line up and Warminster was dismissed for 216 in the 45th over.

After the disappointment of the week before it was great to see runs on the board and two excellent bowling performances by future Marshfield stars, Sam Duckett and Eliot Ede. Both bowled well, and Elliot, in particular, bowled better than his 9-1-34-1 suggest. It is no stretch to suggest that had both been available for the Bradford game the result would have been different.

MoM without question Tom Lamb. His innings was excellently paced throughout and realistically once he got in, he never looked like not scoring a big one.

As a post-script it must be revealed that the journey home for most of the cohort was somewhat lengthy, and involved a number of hostelries, included at least one buxom bar-maid (is this terminology allowed in 2019? –Ed), and a brief encounter with the Bath Rugby coaching staff. Suffice to say that at least one member was consigned to the spare bedroom on (eventually) returning to home…
