Wilting 3rds Walloped at Allington
Marshfield 3rd’s vs Allington, Chippenham, 29th June 2019
Allington won by 113 runs
On the hottest day of the year, Marshfield 3rd’s succumbed to another defeat in this disappointing season. With an ostensibly stronger side than the previous week, and against an Allington side who had been rolled over the week before for just 52 against Christian Malford, hopes were high going into the match. Alas, Jim lost the toss and Marshfield were sentenced to endure one the longest and most unpleasant fielding sessions that this correspondent can recall.
The true heat of the day was disguised by the strong wind, blowing like a hair dryer under a blazing sun. Later reports suggest the day topped out at 32 degrees, but that is the shade temperature, and for the first innings there was not a hint of cloud cover. Dixon and Duckett opened the bowling, but despite some decent tidy bowling from the former and some extravagant movement from the latter, a wicket could not be found. Duckett was replaced after four overs and shortly after left the field, feeling unwell. Will Christie, Chriss Ruddell and Graham Tanner were all tried to no avail as the Allington openers forged on, punishing bad balls and defending stoutly.
When the partnership was finally broken the score was past 150, and the damage was done. Jim managed to take two late wickets, with Graham and Dicko also getting into the act, but with Williams bringing up his maiden century shortly before the end of the innings and some late hitting from Cleverly (a six and a four from his two balls) Allington closed on 252.
At least three drinks breaks were taken, and the ball became lost on a number of occasions. As a result, the innings took well over three hours to complete. More than one of the Marshfield players reported feeling unwell at points during the afternoon.
With Richard Guy injured early on, your correspondent was asked to open with Andy Jenkins. At first, things went well, and the score reached 33 before a rash shot was played by the novice opener. No sooner had I reached the showers, but I was joined by Jenkins who had contrived to be bowled off several parts of his anatomy. Tony Trotman fell victim to an outstanding catch in the deep, and Sam Duckett hit two fours before succumbing. Will Christie (16) and Jim Creed (9) chipped in, but the batting honours went to Graham Tanner, wielding the long handle to good effect with his unbeaten 37 featuring six boundaries. He lost partners regularly, with the injured Prof Guy the last man out for a duck, and Marshfield closed on 139 all out.
Annoyingly, after fielding for more than three hours in the blazing sun, cloud cover now came over for the Marshfield innings, with a noticeable drop in temperature. Clearly, an inability to take early wickets is proving a problem for the 3rds, something that needs to improve if relegation is to be avoided.
MoM was G-Tan for his bludgeoning, and well done to all who stuck at it in the heat.
