Marshfield CC 1st XI Captains Report – Season 2019

1st XI team 2019

Following the last few years’ disappointment, the goal was clear at the start of the season. Win. The. League. For us, it wasn’t just about winning the league but it was the manner in which we should achieve it. Before going into the season we knew we were the best side in the competition and we had known that for the previous year, if not two years before. We were a side that in that past had ‘bottled it’ – and we didn’t want the same to happen this year.

P18, W16, L2. The results speak for themselves – every single player to have played during the season impacted a game at some point no matter how big or small.

There were some standout games in the season the cannot go without being mentioned. The demolition of Swindon away, bowling them out for just 64 really set a marker of the kind of cricket we were able to play. Following on from that, the win vs Westbury at home and the manner of which we turned that game around after being bowled out for 120 was absolutely outstanding, every single player in that game put in a shift at some point – the stand out being Jeremy’s opening spell of 5-15.

Jeremy’s performances this season were top drawer. 679 runs @42.44 and 38 wickets @11.39 deservedly earned him WEPL Wiltshire Player of the Season, he was clearly a cut above the rest and I still think he has much more to give. Thanks to Tayla, his girlfriend, for keeping him in on Friday nights rather than exploring the local circuit with the rest of the Slytherin.

On the subject of Slytherin, whilst Lachlan’s tinder performance was significantly poorer than last years, he made up for that by leading the attack superbly. His return of 36 wickets @ 23.86 doesn’t quite do him justice as to how stupid he made some of these batsmen look. Unfortunately for us, Lachie’s services are going to be very difficult to acquire for the 3rd season in a row but as contributions go, we have been very lucky to have him here.

Tom Clist and Cam Walker also made it into the WEPL Wiltshire top 10 wicket takers with 34 wickets @ 11.18 and 33 wickets @ 11.39 respectively. Having 4 of our bowlers in the top 10 really goes to show the calibre of performances we put in and ultimately, the bowling unit probably played the biggest part in us winning the league this year.

James Williams made it to number 7 in league for scoring 462 runs @ 46.20 taking his WEPL run tally up to….(ask him!). Coming in at number 7, James combined with others such as Jack Grant, Dave Jenkins and Burny to put a score on the board when a Marshfield collapse looked imminent. James’ performances see him penned in for another year of first team cricket, much to his disappointment of not being able to live the 2s dream he so badly wants.

Our focus now moves on to next season where we want to build on the success of this year. For that, we will look to strengthen the squad in appropriate places whilst also trying to acquire Lachie 2.0.

A big thank you to the Chairman, Piercy, JB, Captain, Chalky, the tea ladies and the rest of the club for your support this year and for doing all the thankless tasks that go unnoticed. Hopefully, we can bring you more success in the 2020 season.
